I began my creative life as an actor and slowly morphed into a writer and, most recently, a director. But one thing I’ve always been is a critic. I believe that for any art form to thrive and progress (and for humanity in general to thrive and progress) critical thought and dialogue are essential. Painters, for instance, have traditionally been ruthlessly critical of one another’s work, sometimes out of envy, but more often than not out of a keen desire to understand and master. We artists aren’t so fragile as we think. The critique and discussion of each other’s work is a healthy (and essential) requirement to furthering the art form as a whole, and refining our individual pursuits in the specific. How else to understand and process this complex and gorgeous beast we call art? No other way, people, no other way. Make art, discuss, make more art.
Hi,
I found your blog recently when I read a mention of Orchestra of St. Luke’s in “prima donna.” Poor Rufus, but great reviews! St. Luke’s is performing a free concert (a sort of sneak-peak of the upcoming season of shows) at Bryant Park Fall Festival, Sept. 20th. We’re inviting people to review the performance via text message the night of the show, but I’d also love to hear your thoughts. I hope you can make it! Say hi at the OSL desk if you have a chance.
